Time Zone Process Outlined

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta has outlined a process to determine what parts of Indiana should be in which Eastern and Central time zones. In a letter to Governor Daniels, Mineta says the U.S. Department of Transportation will publish in the Federal Register a notice that advises local officials to notify the DOT if they want their counties to change time zones. Local officials will also have to submit data that supports their requests. Mineta says the DOT will schedule public hearings for time zone changes only if the DOT determines that a change is justified under federal law and regulations. Mineta’s letter does not indicate when this process will begin.
