Indiana Launches Record Relief Effort
Indiana is launching the largest relief effort in state history to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. The state’s homeland security director says about 200 state employees will head to Mississippi tomorrow. The group includes National Guardsmen, Indiana State Police officers and workers from the Family and Social Services Administration and the departments of Health, Homeland Security and Natural Resources. DNR Director Kyle Hupfer says his department will take boats and all-terrain vehicles to help with rescue operations. The Indiana group includes nurses and mental health professionals. And FSSA workers will prepare waivers to allow disabled Mississippi residents to come to Indiana for treatment.
