Governor Takes Steps Against Property Taxes
Governor Mitch Daniels has ordered Marion County officials to reassess properties in the county. And he ordered the county to freeze its property tax bills at last year’s rates until the reassessment is done. Daniels took the step because the county might have undervalued commercial properties, resulting in unfair property tax bills for homeowners. Daniels says he might have to order reassessments in many other counties but he needs more data first. In a longer term step to reduce taxes, Governor Daniels has announced that a special commission will study ways to reorganize local government. Daniels says Indiana’s local government system is antiquated and has too many offices and layers of bureaucracy.
