Documentary Filmmaker Chooses Warsaw High School

An Oscar-nominated filmmaker has chosen Warsaw Community High School as the setting for a documentary on teenage life in mid-America. School officials have announced that Nanette Burstein will shoot “American Teen” at the Warsaw school. Burstein plans to tell the school board about her plans at its August 15th meeting. If the board approves a legal agreement and allows the documentary to proceed, filming would begin this fall. Crews would not film while classes are in session, except during special events. Burstein says the goal of the documentary is to tell a story about coming of age in mid-America and about the different decisions the students make. She chose Warsaw after auditioning students at eight schools in Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The first feature length documentary Burstein produced and directed was "On the Ropes," which was about three young boxers. It received an Oscar nomination.

Syracuse Police Raid Teen Party

Police in Syracuse arrested three people early this morning after they responded to a report of underage drinkers. The charges include resisting law enforcement by fleeing, consumption of alcohol by a minor, possession of stolen property and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

United Way Selects Campaign Chair

Portrait of Sally BaileyThe United Way of Kosciusko County has named the chairperson for its 2005 campaign. Sally Bailey is an agent with Coldwell Banker Hamilton Realty in Warsaw. The goal for this year’s United Way campaign is one million, 575-thousand dollars.

Warsaw Superintendent Resigns

Warsaw Community Schools Superintendent David McGuire resigned last night. At a spcial meeting of the school board, Board President Ron Yeiter read a statement that McGuire’s attorney had approved. In part, the statement read, “Much progress was made during Dr. McGuire’s service to the children of Warsaw Community Schools. It is apparent the board and Dr. McGuire, however, that it is time for a change in leadership for the schools.” McGuire will keep his pay, retirement and insurance benefits and work as an advisor to the school system until January 13th or until he finds another job. For the past few weeks, Yeiter and school system attorney Rex Reed had been conducting an investigation into whether there was cause to terminate McGuire’s contract. Board members say the confidentiality of personnel records prohibited them from saying why they started the investigation.

Tornado Near Grissom Confirmed

It turns out that people who thought they saw a tornado near Grissom Air Reserve Base Tuesday night were right. A survey team from the National Weather Service has confirmed that an F2 tornado cut a four-mile path through part of southeastern Cass County and southwestern Miami County. It damaged or destroyed at least a dozen structures but reportedly did not cause any serious injuries.

Syracuse Resident Appointed to University Board

Governor Daniels has appointed a Vincennes University student from Syracuse to will serve a one-year term as student trustee on the university’s board of trustees. Gregg Wong is a philosophy major who was elected to serve as the student body executive treasurer in 2004 and has worked with faculty to review policy changes and procedures.

Possible Tornado Strikes Near Grissom

A possible tornado reportedly did heavy damage to a house and blew down a barn and several large trees near Grissom Air Reserve Base last night. State police say a caller on 9-1-1 reported seeing a tornado at about 8:15 last night, but the call was cut off before they got complete information. This morning, a survey team from the National Weather Service will look over the damage to determine whether it was caused by a tornado or by straight-line winds. Earlier yesterday afternoon, lightning struck a firefighter in Decatur while he was watching for severe weather. He did not require hospitalization and doctors expect him to recover fully.

Wabash County Crash Critically Injures Teen

An 18-year-old Wabash man is in critical condition this morning after the pickup truck in which he was riding rolled into the path of a semi truck yesterday. It happened on U-S 24 near Wabash. Two others in the pickup truck suffered minor injuries… including a 14-year-old boy and the 17-year-old boy who was driving. The driver of the semi was not injured.

Fiery Crash Kills Warsaw Man

A 26-year-old Warsaw man died in a burning S-U-V this morning. Kosciusko County Police say it looks like Donald E. Ditton, Jr. had been driving on County Road 300W sometime before 5:55 a.m., left the road and hit a tree nearly head-on. The G-M-C Jimmy then continued into a cornfield and became engulfed in flames. Ditton was the only person in the vehicle. A representative of the coroner'’s office pronounced him dead at the scene.

State Trooper Injured in Interstate 69 Crash

An Indiana State trooper is in fair condition in a Fort Wayne hospital this morning after a car hit the trooper’s squad car on I-69 yesterday. State police say at the time of the crash, Trooper Wes Rowlader was sitting in his squad car on the shoulder of the Interstate, writing a ticket. The collision caused the trooper’s car to roll over. The crash also injured the couple in the other car, both of whom are in their 80s.

Warsaw Wins Grant for Greenway

The Indiana Department of Transportation says the City of Warsaw will get a half-million-dollar grant for the Lake City Greenway. The greenway is a planned walking path that will connect various parts of the city. The grant comes from federal money administered by the state.

WCS Board to Discuss Interim Superintendents

The agenda for Wednesday's special meeting of the Warsaw Community Schools Board includes a discussion of "Interim Superintendent Candidates." It's the same agenda that also includes a discussion and possible vote on the contract of Superintendent Dave McGuire. For the past several weeks, the school board president and lawyer have been investigating whether cause exists to terminate McGuire's contract.

Warsaw School Board Postpones Meeting

The special meeting of the Warsaw Community Schools board scheduled for noon today has been postponed. The agenda for today's meeting included a discussion of Superintendent Dave McGuire's contract. The board now plans to meet in exeuctive session at six p.m. Wednesday, July 27, with a public meeting to follow at 7 p.m. For more on this story, tune in tomorrow morning between 6 and 8:30 a.m.

Avoiding Heat-Related Illness

A serious heat situation continues today. According to a heat advisory from the National Weather Service, heat index values in some parts of northern Indiana could get up to 109 degrees today.

Motorcycle Crash Injures Mentone Man

A motorcycle crash in Whitley County has seriously injured a Mentone man. The 34-year-old man is in critical condition in a Fort Wayne hospital this morning. A helicopter flew him there after he lost control of his motorcycle on State Road Five near South Whitley and suffered head injuries. Police say the man was not wearing a helmet.

Warsaw Schools Announce Registration, First Day

Warsaw Community Schools have announced registration dates for the 2005-2006 school year. Parents may register their children August 4 from noon to 6 p.m., August 5 and August 8 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and August 9 from noon to 6 p.m. Parents who are unsure what school their children will attend should contact the school system’s transportation department at (574) 269-1750. The first day of school for students will be Thursday, August 18. School opening and closing times will be the same as last year. As we did last year, Q101 will announce any delays or closings of Warsaw Schools. Administrators normally make such decisions by 6 a.m.

Peru Man Dies in Mississinewa Lake

Conservation Officers and State Police divers recovered the body of a Peru man from Mississinewa Lake in southern Wabash County this morning. According to a news release from the Department of Natural Resources, 48-year-old James V. Wright had been swimming with friends yesterday. His friends reported him missing at about 6 p.m. Divers searched for Wright then but called off their search because of darkness. They returned this morning and found Wright’s body in six feet of water about 10 feet from shore. The Wabash County Coroner’s Office will investigate exactly how Wright died.

Hoosiers Urged to Protect Telemarketing Ban

Republican State Representative Bill Ruppel of North Manchester is urging Hoosiers to tell a federal agency how they feel about getting telemarketing calls from banks. The Consumer Bankers Association (CBA) has petitioned the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to allow out of state banks to call people at home. The FCC is seeking public input on the issue. Big Fire Closes U.S. 6 in Noble County

Police closed a portion of U-S Six west of Kendallville this morning, after a big fire broke out at a steel heat-treating plant at about 3 a.m. About a dozen fire departments from Noble and Lagrange Counties responded to the fire, which was just coming under control at about five this morning. Police closed U-S six between its east junction with State Road Nine and its west junction with State Road Three. Dispatchers expected the highway to be closed well into the morning.

Storms Spare Q101 Area

Yesterday’s severe storms did not do much damage in the Q101 area. The Syracuse Fire Department reported a very large tree limb and power lines down. But most of the problems were to the north and northeast, especially in Saint Joe, Elkhart, LaGrange and Steuben Counties.

Bluffton Ultralight Plane Crash Kills Pilot

A 70-year-old Allen County man died after the ultralight plane he was flying crashed near Bluffton yesterday. Witnesses say a gust of wind turned the plane upside down and sent it spiraling into a field. The crash happened at about six o’clock, just as yesterday’s big thunderstorms were reaching the Bluffton area. The Journal-Gazette's web site has a photo of the damaged ultralight plane.

Warsaw School Board to Discuss Supt. at Speical Meeting

The Warsaw Community Schools Board announced today that it will hold a special meeting July 25 to discuss its contract with Superintendent Dave McGuire. The public meeting will begin at noon. For the past several weeks, school board President Ron Yeiter and attorney Max Reed have been investigating whether the board has cause to terminate McGuire's contact, which has two years left on it. Board members have declined to say why they are investigating McGuire.

Goff Appointed Wabash Superior Judge

Governor Daniels has appointed a LaFontaine native as Wabash Superior Court Judge. Christopher Goff succeeds Judge Michael Sposeep who resigned earlier this month. Goff has experience in private legal practice, where he focused on criminal defense and domestic relations. He has also served as Wabash Circuit Court IV-D Commissioner and as a public defender.

Independent Feature Film to be Shot in Warsaw

A movie production company plans to shoot a feature film in the Warsaw area next month. The independent film is called “Summer Nuts.” It’s a comedy about a group of actors from a struggling summer stock theater who form the worst summer softball team in the history of the sport. Early next month, the director plans to announce local auditions for minor roles. Shooting will begin in late August. Heat Advisory Cancelled

The National Weather Service cancelled a heat advisory for the Q101 area at 3:55 p.m. this afternoon. The NWS says showers and thunderstorms have cooled the air over most of the area and heat indicies of 100 degrees or more are no longer expected.

Time Zone Process Outlined

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta has outlined a process to determine what parts of Indiana should be in which Eastern and Central time zones. In a letter to Governor Daniels, Mineta says the U.S. Department of Transportation will publish in the Federal Register a notice that advises local officials to notify the DOT if they want their counties to change time zones. Local officials will also have to submit data that supports their requests. Mineta says the DOT will schedule public hearings for time zone changes only if the DOT determines that a change is justified under federal law and regulations. Mineta’s letter does not indicate when this process will begin.

Heat and humidity will combine to create dangerous conditions throughout the Q101 area today.

Meteorologist Gregory Lamberty of the national weather service says the high humidity will make it more difficult for your body to cool itself. He says the humidity inhibits the evaporation of sweat, and it's that evaporation that cools your body. Lamberty says the heat and humidity combined will result in a heat index of up to 106 degrees today. He suggests staying indoors as much as possible, drinking plenty of water and checking on elderly neighbors and family members, who are even more susceptible to these conditions.

Superintendent's Contract on Tonight's Board Agenda

The Warsaw Community Schools board plans to discuss Superintendent Dave McGuire’s contract during its meeting tonight. The board meets at seven o’clock. The Whitko School Board also meets tonight at seven.

City Council to Discuss Deer Problem

Warsaw City Council plans to further discuss the problem with the city’s deer population during its meeting tonight. At a previous meeting, council members heard about the possibility of permitting a controlled hunt to thin the deer herd. Council meets at seven o’clock at city hall.

Ligonier Police Show New Headquarters

Ligonier Police invited the public to tour their new police station over the weekend. The building increased the police department’s space from 600 to nearly 20-thousand square feet. The Department moved in at the beginning of the month.

Syracuse License Branch to Close

The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced this afternoon that it will close its license branch in Syracuse at the end of business Saturday, July 30. The Syracuse branch is one of six around the state that will close that day. After public hearings on branch closings, the B-M-V has decided to keep two branches open -- one in Versailles and one in Walkerton. B-M-V Commissioner Joel Silverman says the Bureau is closing branches to free up money for improvements at remaining branches. He says the B-M-V will invest in a computer system upgrade, a better training program for employees and other improvements. Silverman says the Bureau's goal is to reduce wait times at all branches to 20 minutes. For more information, see today's news release on the Bureau of Motor Vehicles web site.

Bush Touts Education Law During Indy Speech

During a speech yesterday at Indiana Black Expo in Indianapolis, President Bush talked about a new Education Department report that shows a narrowing gap between the test scores of white and black elementary students. Mr. Bush says black voters can thank his “no child left behind” law.

Wolkins, Ruppel Appointed to Committees

Two area legislators have been appointed to interim committees. Republican Representative Dave Wolkins of Winona Lake will chair the Eminent Domain Study Committee and serve as a member of the Air Pollution Compliance Advisory Panel and Environmental Quality Service Council. Republican Representative Bill Ruppel or North Manchester will chair the State Fair Advisory committee and serve as a member of the Emergency Management, Fire and Building Services and Public Safety Training Foundation.

North Manchester Death Ruled Homicide

That death investigation in North Manchester that Q101 told you about yesterday is a homicide investigation this morning. North Manchester and Indiana State Police say this morning that an autopsy shows that a man died of foul play in a mobile home on South Mill Street. But police are not saying how the man died. They say the victim was 30-year-old Leodegario Rodriguez. Police and paramedics discovered his body Tuesday afternoon, after they got a 9-1-1 call about an unresponsive person in the home. Rodriguez’ death is the first homicide North Manchester has seen in more than a decade. And police are looking for your help finding the killer. If you know anything that might help them find the killer, call the North Manchester Police Department or the Peru post of Indiana State Police.

Logansport Barricade Incident Ends Peacefully

Police say a man in Logansport took a shot at officers and then barricaded himself in a home for several hours last night. A police negotiator eventually talked the man out and police arrested him. No one was hurt.

President Bush to Speak in Indy

President Bush appears at the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration in Indianapolis today. During a speech at the RCA Dome, Mr. Bush plans to talk about how small business and home ownership among blacks have reached all-time highs during his administration.

Elkhart County RV Maker Cuts Staff

Coachmen Industries says it has reduced its work force by more than 10 percent. The company has about two thousand workers who build R-Vs in Elkhart County. The company says it had to lay people off because of a glut of unsold RVs on dealer lots.

Gasoline Prices Reach New Record

The AAA Hoosier Motor Club says gasoline prices have dropped slightly in Indiana after hitting a new record high this week. Self-serve regular averaged a little more than $2.33 a gallon Tuesday. That was a new record average high for the state. Yesterday, average prices fell to slightly below $2.33. The motor club says the state’s highest prices yesterday were in Fort Wayne and Gary. Second Robbery Suspect Arrested

Warsaw and North Webster Police announced today that they have made a second arrest in connection with armed robberies in their communities. According to a news release, police arrested a 20-year-old Warsaw man at a local motel last Saturday. He faces charges of armed robbery and invasion of privacy. Police say the man is a suspect in robberies at two car washes – one June 18th in Warsaw and another June 20th in North Webster. Police say they expect to make additional arrests in the cases.

Mishler Appointed to Interim Committees

Senate President Pro Tempore Robert D. Garton has appointed Sen. Ryan Mishler (R-Bremen) to two interim study committees. Mishler will serve on the Indiana Commission on Autism and the Indiana Recycling and Energy Development Board. Mishler represents St. Joseph, Marshall, Kosciusko and Elkhart counties.

Police Investigate North Manchester Death

Indiana State Police are investigating the death of a North Manchester man this morning. North Manchester Police got a 9-1-1 call at about four o’clock yesterday afternoon about an unresponsive man. When town police and paramedics got to the residence on South Mill Street, they found the man dead. North Manchester police called in state police to investigate. At last report, state police had not released any information about who the man was or how he might have died. According to a news release from state police, an autopsy will be performed.

Four Departments Fight Warsaw Warehouse Fire

A big fire at a Sprint warehouse on Warsaw’s west side this morning. Warsaw Fire Chief Matt Warren says it took about 50 firefighters from four departments nearly an hour and a half to control the fire… because it was difficult to get to. Warren says the fire damaged an area where Sprint stored battery chargers for its forklifts… and it caused smoke damage throughout the building. Sprint uses the warehouse to store telephone equipment. The alarm came in just before two a.m. No one was in the building at the time and no one was hurt. The Warsaw, Winona Lake, Leesburg an Atwood fire departments responded.

Woman Shot in Wabash

Wabash police are investigating a shooting this morning. According to a news release, police got a call just after 10 o’clock last night to the Paradise Springs Historical Park along the banks of the Wabash River on the southeast side of the downtown area. They arrived to find a woman with a single gunshot wound. Police are not releasing any information about the condition of the victim. They say they recovered a weapon at the scene.

Man Mugged in Columbia City

Columbia City police are looking for your help this morning catching the perpetrators of a robbery yesterday. Police say the victim was a 33-year-old South Whitley man, who was sitting in his car in front of the Rent-a-Center store. Police say that at about one o’clock, two men robbed the victim of his cash and then fled in a brown Mercury Cougar or Sable. Police describe the suspects as white men in their early twenties. They both wore baseball caps. One suspect wore a black t-shirt and the other wore a gray t-shirt. Crash Closes Eastbound U.S. 30

A crash forced Kosciusko County police to close the eastbound lanes of U-S 30 just east of Warsaw this morning. Police began sending eastbound traffic down Old U-S 30 to State Road 13 at about 5:30 this morning. They expected to have U-S 30 back open by about 7:30.

Missing Pierceton Boy Returns Home

A 15-year-old Pierceton boy who disappeared last week has returned home. No information is available from police this morning on exactly what happened to the boy, who disappeared while on his way to a friend’s house last Wednesday.

Warsaw Waterskiers Advance to National Tourney

A Warsaw waterskiing club has won the right to compete in a national ski tournament. The Lake City Skiers won a regional ski tournament over the weekend. You can watch as the group practices for a national competition August sixth. Members will run their show twice a week on Hidden Lake. That’s behind Smith Tire on State Road 15, just south of U-S 30. The practice sessions will be at five o’clock on Sunday afternoons and 6:30 on Tuesday evenings.

Foundation Grants Money for Child Care Field Trips

The Kosciusko County Community Foundation announced today that it has granted $1,500 to New Beginnings Child Care, Inc., Milford, to pay for various activities including a trip to “HealthWorks! Kids' Museum” in South Bend, swimming, roller skating and bowling. New Beginnings is a non-profit child care center for children from two to 12 years old.

Pierceton Teen Missing Since Wednesday

Police are looking for a missing 15-year-old Pierceton boy this morning. Indiana State Police say Johnny Salisbury, Jr. was last seen at about three o’clock Wednesday afternoon, when he was on his way to go swimming at a friend’s house. He never arrived. Johnny is a white boy, about five feet, 10 inches tall, with short, dark brown hair. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a light blue t-shirt. Terror Threat Increase Affects Indiana

The federal government has raised the terrorism threat level on all U.S. commuter trains, including the South Shore Railroad that connects South Bend to Chicago. Q101 spoke with Eric Dietz, Executive Director of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. Hear three excerpts from our interview with Dietz, in which he talks about how South Shore riders should expect to see more police officers today, the fact that no specific threat has been made and how citizens can help keep Indiana secure by noticing and reporting anything suspicious. Bourbon Woman Drives Into Path of Semi

A 20-year-old Bourbon woman was seriously injured when her car collided with a semi truck on U-S 30 last night. Kosciusko County police say it looks like the woman disregarded a traffic light at the intersection of U-S 30 and State Road 19 and drove into the path of the semi. The truck driver was not hurt.

Wabash County Crash Injures Two

A two-car crash south of Wabash yesterday afternoon seriously injured two people. A 59-year-old Wabash woman is in critical condition this morning and a 25-year-old Urbana woman is in fair condition after a crash at the intersection of old State Road 15 and State Road 1-24. Police say the Wabash woman disregarded a stop sign and drove into the path of the other car. Both women were flown from the scene to a Fort Wayne hospital.

Fire Engulfs Andrews-Area Barn

A barn fire lit up the sky near the Huntington County town of Andrews last night. Dispatchers say the call came in at 11:14 p.m. and when firefighters arrived, they reported that the barn was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters from Andrews, Bippus and Lagro fought the fire. No one was hurt.

Field Fire Keeps Firefighters Busy

It took firefighters from three departments about 40 minutes to put out a field fire just north of Huntington yesterday. The fire was reported at about a quarter till four yesterday afternoon.

Storm Drops "Land Spout" on Kosciusko County

The National Weather Service confirms that a small tornado touched down in Kosciusko County yesterday evening. But Meteorologist Patrick Murphy says the phenomenon barely met the definition of "tornado." Hear Murphy describe the "land spout." The land spout is barely visible in the center of the photo, which was sent to the National Weather Service by a member of the public. Murphy says the land spout was on the ground for a very short time and did not do any damage. But he says straight-line winds from an isolated thunderstorm did bring down some trees and power lines in the Hoffman Lake area west of Warsaw.

Injured Moped Rider Identified as Silver Lake Resident

Wabash County police have identified a man who was injured in a moped accident yesterday afternoon. At about four o'clock this afternoon, police confirmed that the man is a 33-year-old resident of Silver Lake. He was flown to a Fort Wayne hospital after a car collided with his moped at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. The Wabash County Sheriff's Department says it got a call from a citizen who suggested that the victim was the Silver Lake man. They were able to use that lead to confirm his identity.

Wabash County police are looking for your help solving a mystery. They say a crash seriously injured an adult male moped rider yesterday, but they have no idea who the man is. A helicopter flew him to a Fort Wayne hospital after the crash. It happened on Singer Road, north of Wabash County Road 11-hundred north at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon. If you have any idea who the moped rider might be, call the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department at 260-563-8891.

  • Winona Lake Senior Center. Ray and Barbara Gsell (pronounced, “Zell”) are amateur instructors who teach six-week classes. They teach classes for both beginners and intermediate dancers. Speed Limits to Begin Changing Today

Crews will begin changing speed limit signs today on Interstate highways all over Indiana. The new signs will allow you to legally drive 70 mils an hour… but not until they’re up.
